You need a growth hacker, but how do you find one? What kind of questions do you address to recruit someone with the right mindset and attitude? You want to hire people who are smarter than you, but it can be difficult to determine if a prospective candidate has what it takes when you only meet them for a few minutes.

A great way to interview a growth hacker is by testing concepts, creativity, and execution. An experienced growth hacker will not give short answers, but will be able to elaborate on their knowledge. There aren’t specific correct answers, but growth hackers work through processes to determine what strategy works best for your business.

Here are some suggestions to help you use your time wisely and ask the right questions when you have a candidate in the running.

What’s your biggest win?

Look for more recent examples. Someone who had a large win over 10 years ago hopefully had one more recently too. Ask for the details on how this win affected the bottom line and inquire about the metrics they chose and what was involved.

What’s the last book you read?

This gives you an idea of if they like to read and helps you understand more about their interests. It doesn’t need to be a business-related book, but you want a growth hacker who enjoys continual learning that can come from reading a book.

What’s your favorite Internet marketing blog?

This gives you an idea on what experts or topics they are following in the industry. You may also get more ideas on blogs to follow. If the interviewee gives a vague answer or says that cannot pick just one, most likely they aren’t paying particular attention to the trends in Internet marketing. Many individuals may stumble over this question, but hopefully they can focus in on a few blogs they follow.

What products or services do you see being our low hanging fruit?

Ask the prospective candidate to develop a marketing plan as an assignment to determine how they would fit with your business. This can help you decide if they have the vision and passion that is needed to help your business grow.

If you could add a feature to our product or services, what would this be?

You are testing interviewees for a type of mindset. Give your candidate the opportunity to explore the possibilities and map out a plan.

Growth hackers are better determined through conceptual questions. Don’t turn to knowledge-based questions, such as how does SEO work or how do you work with Facebook ads? Instead, test their skills for problem solving, creativity, and having the right attitude to increase your business growth.
